The Heron & Brearley Group is proud to announce a major investment at Okell’s Brewery with the installation and official opening of a state-of-the-art canning line at the brewery’s headquarters in Kewaigue, just outside Douglas.
The new facility was formally opened by the Lieutenant Governor, Sir John Lorimer KCB DSO MBE, at a special event that also marked the start of Okell’s 175th anniversary celebrations – a milestone for one of the Isle of Man’s most iconic and enduring brands.
A Step Forward for Sustainability and Efficiency
The introduction of this fully automated canning line marks a significant development in Okell’s operations. For the first time, the brewery will be able to can its products directly on Island, removing the need for drinks to be exported for packaging – a move that will reduce both costs and environmental impact.
Capable of producing 1,500 cans per hour in a range of sizes from 150ml to 500ml, the versatile system can handle beer, cider, seltzers and soft drinks, opening new opportunities for innovation across the H&B portfolio.
Okell’s Managing Director Ollie Neale commented:
“The new canning line represents a major investment in making our operations more efficient and more sustainable. The high-quality, UK-manufactured equipment offers high-speed precision that preserves the freshness and purity of our brews, while also giving us greater flexibility for creative labelling and packaging.
“Cans are popular with customers as they’re lightweight, easier to store, and more environmentally friendly. For us, being able to can on Island means lower emissions and greater control over the quality of every product we produce.”
Launching a Special Edition to Mark 175 Years
To commemorate this milestone, Sir John Lorimer pressed the button to start the canning of a special edition Smoked Porter – an updated take on one of Okell’s earliest recipes. This limited-edition dark, malty beer pays homage to Okell’s long brewing heritage and celebrates the company’s 175 years of craftsmanship and commitment to the Manx Pure Beer Act.
A Legacy of Innovation
Founded in 1850 by Dr William Okell, a Lancashire surgeon and apothecary, Okell’s quickly became a pioneer in Manx brewing. Dr Okell’s patented steam-powered Falcon Brewery was one of the most advanced of its time, setting new standards for quality and consistency.
Through two world wars, industrial change and evolving tastes, Okell’s has remained a steadfast symbol of Manx pride and brewing excellence. Today, as part of the Heron & Brearley Group, the brewery continues to uphold those founding principles – crafting beers of character for local customers and exporting Manx quality to beer enthusiasts around the world.
Looking Ahead
This investment reflects H&B Group’s ongoing commitment to supporting local industry and ensuring the continued growth and sustainability of its brands. With innovation rooted in tradition, Okell’s is well positioned to continue leading the way for the next generation of Manx brewing.
